The girls rebounded in the best possible way after the disappointment of last week's County Cup game, this week the focus was back on the league and right from the warm up, we could tell that the girls had arrived ready to play today.
The pressure was immediate, almost all of the play was in the opposition half and took only 6 minutes for this to yield a goal, the assist came from one of Emma's "Delap" throw ins falling to Jueun who calmly opened her account for the day. There would be more goals to come, but the next 20 mins saw 3 or 4 very close chances either denied by the AFC goalkeeper or go just wide of the post. Then the sucker punch, a goal from nothing really, a rare bit of possession in our half for AFC Reading and a diagonal shot from outside the area which we think took a cruel deflection to wrong foot Teagan.
1-1 was the half time tally, but the Panthers were well on top of both possession and territory, and they would have another 35 mins to try to turn this into a winning score.
Two minutes into the second half, they converted game pressure into score board numbers, when Jueun struck again, this time a well-worked short corner routine with Alexia provided girls the lead they richly deserved, 2-1.
From here, the girls were not going to give up the initiative again, they played with energy and determination. Another corner resulted in a bit of ping pong in the area, Jueun pounced on the ball and completed her hat trick from close range, 3-1.
One minute later, a very popular 4th goal for the Panthers, Jueun's accurate cross found Florence who drove the ball home to much audible delight from all of the players 4-1. Florence came close twice more, a good save from the keeper and then a shot wide. With 10 to 15 minutes to go, we all felt the result was almost assured, but AFC Reading certainly didn't feel that way as they now played their best football of the game, some rapid runs down the Panther's right almost broke through but for Lily and Amelia's interventions. The girls kept them out and then went back on the front foot.
Phoebe, now playing on the left wing for the final quarter, broke through the defence and tried a shot which rebounded off an AFC player in the box and fell at Aster's feet who blasted the ball into the net from 3 metres out, 5-1. It might have been 6 within 2 minutes, but for an unfortunate offside close to the goal. Then it was 6, one minute later, when Alexia drove into the box, fending of 2 or 3 defenders and scoring past the keeper, 6-1.
A prolific and dominant day for the Panthers today, Elise was superb in the middle of the field, Lois was first to the loose ball again, Jueun was destructive in attack with 3 goals and a turn of pace to worry any defender, Alexia's delivery and awareness was spot on and Amelia and Karlina's "fire brigade" heroics at the back made sure that the opposition had very few chances to score. The player of the match this week was Florence, who was playing up front today, scoring and creating chances, so close to a hat trick of her own, all whilst running her socks off - well played.
