With our star ⭐️ keeper on the injury list for the foreseeable future, the first mention in this match report must be thank Brooke and Florence for stepping up to each play a half in goal
The game started very evenly balanced, both teams pushing for a goal, but the defences were solid at both ends. It was Jueun who broke the deadlock, she was put through by Alexia and then let rip with a fizzing shot from outside the area which screamed over the keeper’s head and high into the net 1-0
This changed the game and it wasn’t long before the Panthers scored again when Florence pounced on a rebounding ball to finish from close range 2-0, then another close range goal came 5 mins later when Alexia’s corner looped over the keeper to land at Aster's feet who tapped it home, then appeared to pause in disbelief for a second before she could satisfy herself that it had definitely gone in and celebrate, 3-0
Despite going 3 goals down in 20 mins, Shinfield were certainly not giving up and they pulled one back with a well taken goal from their tall left winger 3-1
The Panthers were still on top and the defenders were having a good match, especially Amelia and Lily who made several critical tackles and interceptions just as Shinfield threatened to break through.
The fourth goal came from the Alexia-Jueun combination once again, with our top scorer adding her second of the match to make it 4-1 at half time. A lot to be pleased about after 35mins, not least the fact that the temperature had increased a good 10 degrees!
The second half started with the Panthers playing with confidence and applying lots of pressure again, Brooke was now free from her GK duties and playing up front again, she came close with a couple of shots, as did Jueun who had one saved and then hit the post.
It was a lovely new playing surface, as flat as a snooker table, and our quicker players were enjoying the firm and smooth going. Aster and Elspeth were finding plenty of space on the wings and one of Aster’s crosses found Jueun who fired the ball home; 5-1 and a hat-trick for our rampaging attacking midfielder.
Phoebe then joined in the goal rush when she shot past the keeper after Alexia’s diagonal shot was deflected into her path; 6-1
The girls were dominating the game from a very firm defence, every defender was putting in a shift especially Lily, who was having perhaps her best game for Wargrave. the commitment from every player and the decision making under pressure was spot on today.
The Panther’s 7th goal was a solo effort, Jueun once again tearing through the Shinfield defence with her pace and control, she went clean through 3 defenders and unleashed a another savage shot on the run to notch up her 4th of the match; 7-1
With 5 minutes to go and the result not in much doubt, what better time for a couple of comedy moments at the back? We could afford to let in 2 late goals today and the girls thoroughly deserved their dominant 7-3 win.
It was very cold at 8:15 this morning, the pitch had only just thawed out when the game kicked off, it would have been understandable if the girls had started slowly today, but they didn’t. Everyone was up for a proper competitive game on this frosty morning and it’s difficult to pick out the performance of one player, but Lily was player of the match for an outstanding defensive display
