Here are the 2019/20 season awards for the Womens 2nd XI Team.
|Players Player||Rosie Tong||This was Rosie’s first season with the team and she made a huge impression both on the pitch and off. Her dedication travelling from Henley on her bike for training and cheery nature at all times made her a contender for all of the awards; it is a credit to her that her fellow team mates chose to recognise her contribution. She is rock solid in the right back position but in training we have seen the power and accuracy of her shooting both with her left and right boot and so hope to see her on the score-sheet next season. Brilliant stuff Rosie!|
|Coaches Player||Carla Schaenzler||Another newbie to the team this season – she has made a huge impression. Carla may have missed as many goals as she scored, however that is because her speed and strength put her in those scoring positions. Carla wins the Managers’ player of the year due to the confidence she gives the coaches of a good result and game when she is in the starting line up, her high work rate and some wonderful finishing -in particular the glancing header goal towards the end of the season- was phenomenal. Well done Carla and good luck for Uni.|
|Most Improved Player||Carmen Murphy||Carmen returned to football this season having taken a couple of seasons out with her young family. As her fitness improved so did her football but the aspect that stood out for the award was her reading and positioning in the game. As centre back she prevented many shots on goal but it was her willingness to put her head on the ball and clear the danger that made the difference. Again, it was a header that is our most memorable moment. The opposition whipped in an early high cross heading to their strikers boot, Carmen running back to the goal managed to backwards header the ball clear out of the area with wondrous skill. Congratulations Carmen and we look forward to continued great stuff next season.|
Our first season as Reserve Team managers (Anthony and Stuart) – what a brilliant time we’ve had! So many great moments to remember and look back on.
Here are just 3 that spring to mind, we know these will bring smiles to the faces of everyone involved :
There was the 3-3 draw with Mortimer Ladies FC, who would have gone top if they had won. A last minute strike from Juliet Flann grabbed a hugely deserved point and spoilt the Mortimer party. Juliet felt “SIX FEET TALL”. So, so sweet!
Then there was Neve Edwards’ last second, 94th minute volley directly from a corner to seize a 4-4 draw v Wallingford Ladies FC. After being level 1-1 at half-time, Lucy Howarth pulled off a string of fabulous saves in the 2nd half to keep us in the game.
We then followed that up with a superb 4-3 away win against the same team. With a young squad, only 11 players and Amanda Cragg -her debut in goal- we put in one of the gutsiest displays we have ever seen on a football field! We were 3-1 up at half time and hung on for the win as the adrenaline took over from our tired legs. The red wine tasted great that night!
Losing our first five games of the season, we had a tough start. However we followed this up by losing only one of the next seven – a magnificent effort and the improvement though the season, game on game, was a credit to you all!
We would like to make a quick mention for all the Women that received nominations for Player’s Player – Juliet, Nix, Neve and Polly! – all well deserved!
Finally, Anthony and Stuart would like to thank everyone involved in playing and supporting the Women’s 2nd XI this season. Yes, we struggled for numbers at times, but with the help from our brilliant U18s, and some of the future stars in the U16s, every time we fielded a team we played with spirit, grace, and bags of enthusiasm. Congratulations to everyone who contributed to the Women’s 2nd XI this season! – we can’t wait to do it all again !
