A great start to the season with a 2-0 win against Laurel Park.
The game started evenly with not many chances for either team. It was pleasing to see that the shape that we talked about before the game was being followed and was working well.
The defence was strong and Hannah did a great job marshalling the others and sweeping up any breaks they had. Saskia was assured in goal without being too busy.
As we grew into the half we began to get more chances going forward but no real openings. We then got a corner and after a superb delivery by Hollie the ball rebounded around in the 6 yard box and was then smashed into the net by Ciara.
We finished the first half strongly but with no more real chances being created for either team.
We spoke at half time time that it was good to see that players were covering for each other and that we needed to continue to do that and play as a team.
The second half started evenly, much like the first half, with Ciara, who was now in goal, acting as a sweeper too.
We had a few corners but couldn’t get onto the end of the excellent deliveries that Hollie was putting into the danger zone.
However, we got caught out playing a high defensive line and were done for speed on a break. Hannah tried her best to get back but a tangle of legs on the edge of the box resulted in a penalty.
Ciara guessed well and saved the penalty kick keeping the score at 1-0.
Not long after, the score was 2-0 with a lovely flowing move down the right hand side. Zoe passed the ball out to Hollie who ran down the wing and delivered a perfect cross into the box which Saskia controlled and shot into the roof of the net.
Laurel Park began to push on more and we were being tested for pace at the back but Amelie, Zoe and Megan were controlling the midfield. Holly and Neve were asked to play more defensive as we were trying to keep the scoreline as it was.
Another break saw Ciara and a Laurel Park forward going for a 50-50 with Ciara coming out worst.
The defensive players Hannah, Hollie, Natalie & Lucy were strong and focused.
We held on to win the game 2-0 but it was our defensive attitude that helped us achieve that. Every player did their bit to ensure we won the game with Lily even clearing the ball with a header as Laurel Park threatened from a throw in. Neve’s determination to chase back and ensure their chances were minimised encouraged others to do the same.
If we continue to play with that attitude and desire this season we should have some more positive results.
