Wycombe Saints 1 – 7 WGFC U16s (BBFA Cup)

Well we finally got to play our first fixture of the Berks & Bucks U16s Girls Cup after two postponements during December.  With a slight ground frost there was a chance this game might also be called off but the referee was happy so we got to play our first game of 2018.

Up against a team who we have never played is always a bit of a lottery especially when we hadn’t played a match since the start of December.  However, after a few minutes of each team trying to work out the other we got off to a perfect start with some good interplay down the right with Hollie taking a shot on early from just outside the area.  The shot was high enough to evade the keeper and low enough to sneak under the crossbar.  That first goal helped settle any early nerves.

Next followed a spell of about 15 mins where each team had chances but were not able to find the right final pass or touch.  However, two quick goals, the first from Zoe with a well taken chance and then one from Hollie who calmly finished off a lovely pass across the box saw us take control of the game.

Wycombe Saints had pace at both ends of the pitch, with their quick striker keeping our defenders busy and most of our runs at goal being well intercepted by a defender who seemed to be everywhere.  Fortunately, one of through balls paid off and Ciara was set free on a one-on-one with the keeper.  She kept her calm on this one and slotted it past the out-rushing keeper.

Half-time came and a 4-0 lead was well deserved.  We changed keeper with Saskia and Ciara switching positions.

We started the 2nd half well enough but Wycombe Saints were certainly applying more pressure.  We were getting slightly stretched in midfield and Wycombe pushed forward.  We did have our chances though with Lily unluckily striking the post having beaten the keeper.  However, our next goal was very fortunate with an unlucky defender slicing a cross into her own goal.

Our defenders who had been solid all game and held their positions very well got caught out and allowed their quick striker to get goal side out on their left.  She was able to turn and cut into the box before firing a shot past Ciara who got one hand to it but the pace on the shot was enough to see it fly into the roof of the net.

Within a minute though we were back up the other end.  Lily who had been caught in the box earlier with the referee playing advantage was up-ended again.  This time the referee pointed to the spot.  Hollie, who was on a hat-trick, was given the responsibility and fired a perfect penalty kick into the bottom corner.

The last 10 mins was controlled from our perspective making sure we didn’t concede anymore.  The final chance of the game came in the last minute when Hollie fired in a shot to the top corner after a great passing move.

A convincing win and we now move onto the Quarter Finals of the BBFA U16s Cup.  Looking at the website it looks like the fixture will be on the 20th January, but we don’t know who the opposition is yet.

A very solid performance from the whole team with everyone remaining focused and switched on throughout.  Well Done 🙂
